I am a writer and teacher, out and about in the world but with Nottingham never far from my heart.
Fun and frightening Halloween times in the Old Vic Tunnels
I was at a bit of a loss for something to do for Halloween this year, I'm not anymore. The Old Vic Tunnels and TimeOut Live are joining forces to bring Londoners a Halloween event that promises to be fun and frightening in equal measure.
The Zombie Horror Camp is three evenings of horror themed entertainment held in the Old Vic Tunnels, a series of cavernous vaults found beneath Waterloo Station. Thanks to Halloween landing on a Wednesday, the ghoulish capers have been moved back to Thursday October 25th, Friday October 26th and Saturday October 27th, so that those who work in the week can join in the fun.
The events will have a chiefly musical edge and will feature DJ sets from a clutch of indie superstars, including The Libertines, Babyshambles and Robots in Disguise. Of course, this being Halloween, the Horrors were never going to be far away; in fact the skinny, kohl-eyed tunesmiths will be in attendance and promise to provide a DJ set of their own.
Amidst the music, there will be a whole host of devilish Halloween side shows for you to check out if you dare, including a grotesque strip club and a voodoo doll making session. The event also boasts a "zombie run", although judging by the speed at which most zombies manoeuvre in the movies this will surely be more of a "zombie amble".
And all this in an environment which is scary enough as it is without all the seasonal adornments. Purchased by the Old Vic in 2010, the tunnels – formally British Rail tunnels numbers 228 to 232 – are dank, dark and delightfully creepy. Ideal for an event of this kind.
So if you fancy some horror-themed fun in the darkness beneath the city, head down to the Old Vic Tunnels on the weekend before Halloween.
