Most people hang fairy lights on Christmas trees, but not Lauren Baker. Her latest exhibition, which she is presenting at the Hang-Up Picture Gallery illuminates a whole manner of things that will short circuit your neurones and blow your mind.
Combining science, nature, light, and death, the Hackney-based artist has created a series of sculptures that pay a visit the afterlife in unexpectedly vivid colour. Blow My Mind, which is open until the 24th January, and free to visit, showcases work such as hand painted skulls, neon lightning bolts, gold plated fingers, a pumping heart, and a six foot coffin that glows so brightly you'd be able to see it underground.
Baker also collaborated with Sequin Kay to create a sequin skull. It is reminiscent of those children craft sets, in which you put sequins on a styrofoam animal, but a lot more elaborate. Utopian Visions is made from twenty-four and a half thousand sequins, over a thousand Swarovski crystals, and took almost three hundred hours to complete. The skull represents the artists' interpretation of the astral plane, which can be visited through lucid dreaming.
