A visit to the World Press Photo Exhibition is certainly a confronting experience. However, the disturbing nature of some of the images should not discourage anyone from seeing this powerful collection, which has returned once again to the Southbank Centre .

It is considered to be the most important international press photography competition and is held annually. The award-winning images, shot by some of the most creative photojournalists in the world, are then exhibited in 50 different countries.

A particularly moving series of photographs are those capturing the aftermath of the Japanese Earthquake and tsunami. There are also photos that portray the conflict in Libya, the chilling massacre in Norway and scenes of violent demonstration from around the world.

This year's winning photograph, taken by Samuel Aranda, depicts a Yemeni woman holding her son who is suffering from the effects of tear gas. It is a raw image that proves difficult to forget, despite the fact that it is presented alongside other award-winning images from the nine contestant categories.

The exhibition runs from 9 November 2012, 10:00am - 27 November 2012, 22:00pm and is a free, ticketless event. It is located in the Level 2 Foyers of the Royal Festival Hall.
