Currently, one-third of all UK households do not contain a single book. That staggering figure is difficult to grasp in such a literate age where there seems to be no end to the making of books, blogs, and written material of all sorts. World Book Night aims to change that statistic, "to change lives and open up a world of possibility to those who haven't discovered why reading matters." On 23 April, Shakespeare's birthday and the international day of the book, World Book Night celebrations will be held globally and locally.
World Book Night works with around 20,000 volunteers across the UK to distribute specially selected books to institutions and charities targeting the hardest to reach populations (e.g. prisoners, homeless, impoverished, disadvantaged youth). In addition to the work of distributing books, the night is oriented around parties and unique events focused on raising awareness and getting people excited about reading. The best way to get involved is to volunteer as a book giver,
support the cause, or attend one of hundreds of local events (see

official website for details).
