Regimental marches and wartime songs will feature in a special concert to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Taking place at Worcester Cathedral on Saturday, 3 May, the concert will include music by composers including Edward Elgar and William Walton.
The Band of the Mercian Regiment, directed by Major Ian Johnson, will perform alongside The Oakville Singers with musical director Ivan Oliver and accompanist John Wilderspin.
Tickets cost £20, with money raised going towards the fundraising campaign for The Worcestershire Soldier Gallery at The Commandery, a new gallery housing wartime memorabilia. The Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire), Museums Worcestershire and the Worcestershire Yeomanry Museum are working in partnership to develop the new gallery, which is funded through The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
To further commemorate VE Day and Operation Varsity, the successful airborne operation launched by Allied troops toward the end of World War II, there are also new items currently on display at the Worcestershire Soldier Gallery at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum.
Stamford Cartwright, curator of the Worcestershire Yeomanry Museum, said:
“The concert promises to be a wonderful evening of celebration and commemoration in the fantastic setting of Worcester Cathedral. We are encouraging people from Worcester and beyond to join us and in doing so support our ongoing fundraising campaign, which will see the creation of a brand-new exhibition of Worcester’s regimental displays at The Commandery.”
Residents of Worcester and beyond are also being asked to complete a short survey to share their local interests as well as how the new Worcestershire Soldier Gallery at The Commandery can meet their needs. The survey can be found
here and closes on 2 May 2025.
