The Georgian building containing Windsor & Eton Brewery's first pub,
The George, is located on Eton's high street overlooking the Thames. The pub has a large beer garden to accommodate crowds during summer tourist season and a cosy interior for the quiet winter months. With Windsor Castle, the River Thames, and Eton College in the vicinity, the pub naturally plays to the theme of traditional English ambience with pub food classics and
craft ales inspired by the local character, such as Windsor Knot, Conqueror, and Knight of the Garter.

Windsor & Eton Brewery has been providing craft beers to local pubs for eight years. Six of their award-winning beers are on offer at The George.

The pub also offers a
traditional-themed menu with ingredients sourced locally from
The Royal Farm Estate. The Brewery's ales show up in a few of the dishes, such as the signature Steak and Ale pie (£15.95). Other traditional British favourites on offer include Fish and Chips (£13.95), Sausages and Mash (£14.95), and Lambs Liver and Bacon (£13.95). If you just need a light bite, the pub also offers a selection of lunchtime sandwiches, like the always enjoyable Battered Cod Fish Finger (£9.90) and Mature Cheddar and Branston Pickle (£6.85; vegetarian).

Classic favourites for dessert include an English Cheeseboard with celery, grapes, apple and a selection of biscuits (£9.95), Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6.95), Cherry and Apple Crumble (£6.95), and, of course, Eton Mess (£5.50)

While it was nice to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine (when I visited in July), I actually preferred the atmosphere in November. The pub was quiet with only a few locals and was warmed with a cheerful winter fire. However, its convenient location next to iconic tourist destinations, focus on English foods and local ales and comfortable atmosphere make it a welcome stop at any time of the year.
