So Much Is Cramped Into 45 Acres For All To Enjoy
Wigginton Park has something of an apology to make.

Don't worry, it IS a park - and a pretty fine one at that. But, despite the name, it isn't actually in the pretty Staffordshire village of Wigginton at all.

In fact, Wigginton Park is firmly located within the neighbouring market town of Tamworth, and has been regarded as a 'green lung' for Tamworth residents for many a year.

The 45 acre park is something of a mixture, and therefore has something of interest for most people.

Dog walkers clearly find the wide open green spaces very much to their liking.

The widespread fields also provide a magnet for football or cricket fans in the warmer, and drier, weather, although there is also a covered football area and an outdoor gym that can be used when the ground is too wet.

The multi-equipment play area is a magnet for young kids

For younger children, there is a fully equipped play area including slides, cradle swing, see saw, climbing frame, roundabout, springers, and climbing rocks, some of which has clearly been provided through lottery funding.

And if the snow does fall, which remains a possibility despite our so-called milder winters, then the slopes within Wigginton Park provide an ideal opportunity to get the sledges out.

Of course, it wasn't always the public park that we see today.

Many years ago the park was just open fields, but in the 18th century it was apparently given over to farming with a small house also built on the site.

In the following century the estate passed to another family who allowed the land to revert to grass and also planted a variety of trees to form an attractive small park.

They also built an attractive spacious house there with lofty rooms and a conservatory which is known to us today as Wigginton Lodge.

Although not currently lived in, the lodge is the home of Tamworth Rugby Union Football Club, who play on a pitch in the park itself.

A Friends of Wigginton Park community group helps to maintain the park, and they currently have plans to dig out a small marsh
area in the bottom of the park to improve the area for insects and amphibians.
