Spectacular award-winning musical Wicked is returning to put a spell on Birmingham audiences for a four-week run.
Wicked will be performed for just 31 performances at
Birmingham Hippodrome from Wednesday 4 April to Sunday 29 April in 2018 - and tickets are expected to sell out quickly when they go on sale in March 2017.
Based on the acclaimed, best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, the show re-imagines the stories and characters originally created by L. Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
It's a magical tale that follows the unlikely friendship between two sorcery students and their extraordinary adventures in Oz, which ultimately sees them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The thrilling musical is packed with songs, like Defying Gravity, along with special effects, technical wizardry and costumes. It features 350 stunning outfits, 140 wigs, 244 pairs of shoes, 110 hats, 125 pairs of gloves and 30 prosthetic masks.
It's that detail that has helped the show win over 100 major awards including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Audience Awards, and a Grammy Award.
It was last at Birmingham Hippodrome during the summer of 2014 when it was so popular that more than 110,000 people went to see it - equivalent to 1 in 10 of the entire population of Birmingham
I caught the show when it was last in the city and what's clever about Wicked is that it takes the story of the Wizard of Oz and weaves it into the musical while also turning everything you once thought about the characters on its head. You'll even see the flying monkeys in a different light once it's all over.
Is Elphaba really wicked or is it evil propoganda by the Wizard of Oz? Has Glinda always been good or just a spoiled rich kid who always got her own way? All these questions will be answered plus much more.
There are dazzling vibrant scenes set in a magic school, a bit like Harry Potter meets Clueless, plus there's adventures to the psychedelic Emerald City and romance too.
Executive Producer Michael McCabe said: "%%We were overwhelmed by the incredible response from audiences and critics alike when we first brought Wicked to Birmingham in 2014, and it is extraordinary to think that over 110,000 people came and saw us. The whole team at the Birmingham Hippodrome showed such tremendous enthusiasm and support, and we're all really delighted to return to this truly magnificent venue."
By the time the show returns to Birmingham, it will have travelled almost 12 thousand miles by road, sea and air since its debut in Manchester on 12 September 2013.
Tickets go on sale on to Hippodrome friends on Tuesday 7 March and to the general public on Tuesday 21 March, 2017, and are expected to sell out quickly.
