The Umbrella Centre offers a huge range of community events
Located in the middle of Whitstable, the Umbrella Centre is a community hub offering a whole host of activities, classes, support groups and social gatherings. There is something on every day of the week and it's all free or low cost.
The programme of events is wide-ranging. The centre aims to offer something for everyone in the community, and it strives to deliver this every week. Helped by a wonderful group of volunteers, there is support, entertainment, advice, education and inclusivity at the Umbrella Centre in Whitstable.
The main hall is large and can be hired by individuals, groups or companies. The revenue received for hiring the space goes towards the activities and programmes so that they can be provided free of charge.
Around the back, there is a Community Cafe. Open 7 days a week, it's a space to meet up with old friends, make new friends and use the free wi-fi. There's a community garden too that is kept by volunteers - perfect for lunches in the warmer months.
Here is a list of some of the great things they offer at the Umbrella Centre:
Farmers' market every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month Brocante or Antique market every month Computer club Bereavement support Crochet and knitters Monday mornings Book club Yoga
Stress-less art class
Mental health support group
Craft and flower classes
Short mat bowls sessions
Take a look at the what's on calendar to see the times and if there are any costs involved.
The Farmer's market is popular with locals and visitors. Homemade cakes, honey, wine, fresh eggs and organic meat are always on offer.
A Hive Workspace also exists within the centre. This is a space for individuals to hire on a half-day basis where a desk, chair and wi-fi is provided. It is much cheaper than renting office space, and there is a community feel as coffee areas are shared with other Hive workers.
