Ballet has been in the spotlight a lot recently, due in part to the success of the recent blockbuster movie, Black Swan.

It's always impressive just how easy ballet dancers make it look, performing with great finesse and elegance, often with a smile on their face, superbly masking the great physical effort and stamina involved. It's a wonder they don't collapse into a heap the moment they walk off stage. Maybe they do.

The English National Ballet, based in Kensington, is one of Europe's top ballet companies. Founded just over 60 years ago, the group comprises some 65 dancers from around 24 countries.

Besides putting on regular shows at the London Coliseum, they also tour around the UK and beyond. Click here to see when and where you can see them perform.

If you'd rather get involved and learn more about ballet, you'll be pleased to know that the English National Ballet runs a learning programme, called Be Engaged.

Be Engaged is made up of all kinds of activities and workshops. They organise, for example, interactive events at their London HQ, as well as at theatres across the country.

These could include the chance to see behind the scenes of a production, and on-stage ballet workshops. They also hold pre-performance talk events where you can find out more about what it takes to be a top ballet dancer, performing at venues around the world.

There are also family workshops involving dancing and live music, as well as a wig and costume demonstration. Anything involving wigs and costumes is sure to be a hit with the kids.

Another option is the Adult Ballet Programme, designed to boost fitness, flexibility and self-confidence through dance.

Taking part in this popular programme also gives participants the chance to obtain tickets for English National Ballet performances at special rates, and also the opportunity to take part in special events.
