Women urged to enjoy beautiful game at their own pace
Some football teams can often be accused of playing matches at a snail's pace. But a relatively new format of the 'beautiful game' now involves merely walking around the pitch rather than running. Walking football is clearly regarded as a slowed down version of the game, designed for anyone looking to exercise in a relaxed, supportive and friendly environment. And now women's walking football is set to kick off at Burntwood Leisure Centre, near Lichfield in Staffordshire, with the first session set to take place on April 25th.
Enjoy walking football at Burntwood Leisure Centre
Through Active Lichfield, Lichfield District Council is launching a new walking football session aimed at women over the age of 50. These sessions are aimed at older women of all abilities and include a gentle warm up. A fully qualified walking football coach will be delivering the sessions on Burntwood Leisure Centre's 3G synthetic football pitch, which was unveiled in December last year. The new soft plastic grass and loose rubber grains means that Burntwood's new 3G pitch is as close as you can get to playing on real grass. But, because it won't get waterlogged, it means it can be used all year round.
Tasmin Turner, Sports Development Officer for Lichfield District Council, said: "Walking football is growing in popularity and so we're delighted to be launching this additional weekly session. There's no advantage to being quick on the pitch, which is a great leveller, making the game fair and great fun for all." The weekly sessions will run weekly every Wednesday from April 25, between 5pm and 6pm. It costs £2.50 per session. To find more sessions aimed at the over 50s go to www.activelichfield.co.uk
The new 3G pitch can also be booked in person at Burntwood Leisure Centre's reception or by calling 01543 308810.
