On the weekend of January 26 to 27th
Walk London will be hosting a
Winter Wanders Weekend of over 30 free walks around the city, which have been organised to suit every age, interest, and ability level. The walks vary in distance, ranging from a few miles to a full day of walking, but the great majority of walks are less than 5 miles (around 2 hours). These fun sight-seeing tours include a walk around the East End, the Thames, Epping Forest, and the secret places of the city. The event is part of an initiative from the mayor's office to make London the most walk-friendly city in Europe by 2015. The following three walks are a sample of the choices available. See

Walk #1 London's Hidden Treasures
This is a walk for those who enjoy history and a touch of the unusual.This walk journeys along the famous South Bank of the Thames and explores London's unique venues and historic past. Hidden treasures are revealed along the way, but you must join the walk to find out what they are. The walk is about 2 miles with an estimated time of 2 hours.

Walk #2 Ghosts of the Old City
This walk begins long after sunset and takes you through the back streets and alleys of medieval London. Not for the faint of heart, this walk visits the churchyards and haunted corners of Aldersgate, Cloth Fair, Charterhouse, and Threadneedle. The walk is less than 5 miles and will take around 2 hours to complete.

Walk #3 Subterranean London - What You're Overlooking
Find out what's happening under the streets as you walk through familiar London scenes. A guide tells the story of secret tunnels, bomb shelters, and crypts just below the surface of the city. Street vents, locked doorways, and emergency exits will never look the same after this walk. The walk is less than 5 miles and will take around 2 hours to finish.
