Bringing the spirit, carnival atmosphere and dancers of Cuba to Birmingham, Vamos Cuba! is a specially-commissioned new dance show.
Birmingham Hippodrome has helped bring this exciting piece of work to the UK with Sadler's Wells. It means
Vamos Cuba! will be performed at Birmingham Hippodrome from November 1 to 5.
From the same creators of Havana Rakatan, this new dance production is set in a hectic Havana Airport where the audience follows an assortment of characters from staff to lovers and families saying their farewells.
Cuban choreographer Nilda Guerra is behind Vamos Cuba! and has included an eclectic mix of dance styles from salsa to rumba, cha-cha-cha and reggaeton.
Fiona Allan, chief executive and artistic director of Birmingham Hippodrome, said: "Vamos Cuba! is like being at a party for a few hours. I went to Cuba to see them rehearsing this production and they are incredibly passionate and talented people."
She added: "The show is set is Havana Airport, which is a place where people often say goodbye to their loved ones not knowing if they will see them again. Cubans are desperate to travel. It's hard for them to do so but they all dream of what it's like to travel the world. It's in their DNA."
A live band led by Julito Padron provides the carnival soundtrack for the Cuban dancers.
Vamos Cuba! is a
Sadler's Wells production that is co-produced with Blacon Productions, Theatres de la Ville de Luxembourg and Birmingham Hippodrome.
Suzanne Walker, executive producer at Sadler's Wells, said: "We didn't want something based on the old cliches but something that would capture the excitement of Cuba now. It's an exciting time of change there and this captures the energy of the younger generation."
