As we enter the third month of the year, cinemas and streaming services continue to offer a plethora of options for movie fans out there. From terrifying horror films like
Pearl and
Scream VI to endearing independent flicks such as
Rye Lane and
A Good Person, there’s something for everyone. Below you’ll find a list of unmissable new films of March 2023, some of which may turn out to be the best of the year.
1. Scream VI
Following the success of the
Scream reboot last year, the sixth film in the horror franchise will be arriving in UK cinemas in March. The survivors of the previous film leave Woodsboro for New York, only to be tormented by the masked killer once again. Unfortunately, Neve Campbell won’t be appearing in
Scream VI, but Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Courtney Cox and Jasmin Savoy Brown will return. They are joined by Liana Liberato and Samara Weaving, as well as Hayden Panettiere from the 2011 film.
2. Pearl
Mia Goth was one of the standout actresses of 2022, and in March her horror film
Pearl will finally land in England.
Pearl is a prequel to
X and centres on the elderly woman, taking us back in time to 1918 when she was at the cusp of adulthood. Pearl is desperate to escape from her family’s farm and is inspired by the films she sees at the cinema to seek a more exciting life as a chorus girl. It doesn’t take long for Pearl to reveal her darker side, and she will do whatever it takes to achieve her dream.
Pearl has received a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 91% and has been described as “clever, limber, gruesome and brutally well acted.” (
The Guardian ) If you love horror – or consider yourself a Mia Goth fan, you won’t want to miss
Pearl.
3. Infinity Pool
Mia Goth is on a roll this year. She also plays the protagonist in
Infinity Pool, another horror film scheduled for a March release. The synopsis of the film from its official IMDb page is as follows: “James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa when a fatal accident exposes the resort’s perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.” Critics have called the film ‘disturbing’, ‘mind-bending’ and ‘unpleasant’. Proceed with caution.
4. Rye Lane
Rye Lane is an upcoming film that was an instant hit at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Directed by Raine Allen Miller,
Rye Lane stars David Johnson and Vivian Oparah as two heartbroken young adults who cross paths at an art gallery in South London. It’s a feel-good romcom that sees the pair venture across Peckham, wandering into karaoke bars, playgrounds and restaurants.
Rye Lane is refreshing and funny, with strong performances from its leads.
5. A Good Person
While there are so many noteworthy films due for release in March,
A Good Person is the one I’m looking forward to the most.
A Good Person follows Allison (played by the always amazing Florence Pugh), whose promising future is derailed after a tragic incident. Allison turns to opioids to cope with her grief until a chance encounter with Daniel (Morgan Freeman) enables her to turn her life around. The cast also includes Jackie Hoffman, Molly Shannon, Celeste O’Connor, Zoe Lister-Jones and Alex Wolff.
A Good Person will be released in select cinemas on the 24th, and on Sky Cinema shortly after.
6. Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the latest film to hit the DC universe after
Black Adam at the end of last year, and is the follow-up to the 2019 flick
Shazam! Zachary Levi will reprise his role as the titular superhero, while Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu have been cast as the villains. Adam Brody, Rachel Zegler and Ross Butler are also in
Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Expect plenty of action and fight scenes. Head to your local cinema on March 17th to see the film on the big screen.
7. Murder Mystery 2
Four years after the first film,
Murder Mystery 2 sees Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler return to the screen as two private detectives who launch their own agency. After the groom disappears at a wedding on a private island, a new case is launched. Look out for Mark Strong and Jodie Turner-Smith. Watch
Murder Mystery 2 on Netflix from the 31st.
8. Close
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival,
Close is a moving portrayal of male friendship and the pressure to fit in at school. It centres on two 13-year-old boys who have always been close but are torn apart when they become victims of bullying. After a tragic incident, one of the boys turns to his friend’s mother in an attempt to understand what has happened.
Close is directed by Lukas Dhont and is his second feature film, after
Girl in 2018.
Close is released in cinemas on the 3rd of March.
9. Allelujah
Based on Alan Bennett’s 2018 play of the same name,
Allelujah is a moving ode to the NHS. It centres on a geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital that is forced to fight back after its patients learn that it is going to be closed. Jennifer Saunders leads the film as Sister Gilpin, while Judi Dench plays a supporting role. While many critics have slammed
Allelujah,
Robbie Collins praises it, saying that “wry, sly and rousing, it’s enough to get you out on the doorstep to bang for Bennett, saucepan and wooden spoon in hand.”
Honourable mentions: 65,
I’m Fine (Thanks For Asking),
God’s Creatures,
John Wick: Chapter 4,
Creed III,
The Narrow Road,
80 For Brady and
Mummies.
