Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden's plaza, Union Jacks is Jamie Oliver's latest offer to the culinary world. Infusing traditional British cuisine with European food traditions, Union Jacks encourages a much more social approach to dining.
Upon entering, one of the most striking aspects of Union Jacks is that it is very open, with transparent walls ensuring that diners are able to eat whilst soaking up Covent Garden's atmosphere. However, this did have a few drawbacks including a group of school children thinking it would be funny to pull funny faces up against the glass. However after a few glasses of the delicious house white wine, this became amusing rather than irritating.
Dinner consisted of empire roast chicken for myself and a salmon salad for my dining companion followed by Eton Mess ice-cream. The food itself, particularly the chicken, was good falling just short of fantastic.
For me though, it was the staff that have secured my return to Union Jacks. They were friendly, polite and always on hand in case we needed anything. We also appreciated the fact that service charge wasn't included in the bill meaning that the tip was left to our own discretion.
All in all would I go back to Union Jacks? Most definitely. Perhaps not for a business meeting due to the numerous distractions, but I will definitely be returning with family and friends.
