Audience members will hear a variety of classical pieces, including Badelt's swashbuckling soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean, Gershwin's Overture to Girl Crazy and Tchaikovsky's ever-popular The Nutcracker Suite, performed by one of the National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain (NCO). The NCO operates six national and six regional orchestras comprising children aged 7-14. The August 20 concert will see the Under-12s Orchestra making its Birmingham Town Hall debut.
To prepare for the concert the youngsters are spending a week rehearsing together at Port Regis School in Dorset. The residential course combines rehearsals with recreation and during the week the young musicians are supported by top class music tutors and care staff.
Founded in 1978 to provide music training for young people, the National Children's Orchestras have performed in some of the world's most prestigious venues and locations, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing.
Excited: Viola player Naina Reddy (pic: Andy Catterall)
Naina Reddy, a 12-year-old viola player from Edgbaston in Birmingham, says she is excited about performing her first public concert with the NCO on August 20. "My first residential course with NCO in the spring was such an amazing experience. I can't wait to play some new music at the Town Hall in Birmingham, especially because it is my hometown."
The NCO's Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Roger Clarkson, says: "The skill and commitment by our young musicians is absolutely amazing and I'm sure that the audience is going to really enjoy the programme of popular favourites.''
Violinist Nicola Benedetti is a Vice-President of the NCO and also an alumni member. In 2015 Nicola performed at the Under -13 Orchestra's Summer Concert at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The young musicians were also joined in the same concert by trumpeter, Wynton Marsalis. Later on in the year, Nicola invited string players from NCO's eldest orchestras to join her on tour in Manchester and Birmingham. (Nicola will perform with the CBSO at Birmingham Symphony Hall on December 6, 2016).
Ticket prices for the August 20 concert, including booking fees, range from £5 (child ticket) to £25 (top price adult ticket). Visit www.thsh.co.uk or telephone the Box Office on 0121 780 3333.
