In Arthurian legend, monsters lurked under the dark Lake Lucerne, but I wouldn't let that put you off a cruise on a
Ullswater Steamer. They have been sailing the Cumbrian lake since 1859, and so far no one has fallen foul of a creature of the deep.
Lake Lucerne forms a unique 'z' shape, which was created in the last Ice Age when three glaciers separated from each other. And instead of instilling fear of mythical monsters, it has in fact been a place of many great poets and writers, including William Wordsworth.
The surrounding area is home to lots of wildlife such as red deer, red squirrels and otters, as well as historical sites like Greenside Mine and Lyulph's Tower.
Ullswater has three steamers, including M.Y. Lady of the Lake, which was first launched in 1877, and is believed to be the oldest working passenger ship in the world. You can ride on her or her sisters, Lady Dorothy, Lady Wakefield, and Western Belle for a cruise along the lake. There are special dates for your diary throughout the year.
