It's the tour with a sting in its tail! Former
Scorpions guitarist,
Uli Jon Roth , is visiting the UK as part of his
Tokyo Tapes Revisited World Tour. He plays the
Robin 2 in Bilston, near Wolverhampton, on December 11, 2017.
Uli, who celebrates his 63rd birthday on December 18, recorded five albums with the Scorpions.
Fly To The Rainbow (1974),
In Trance (1975),
Virgin Killer (1976) and
Taken by Force (1977) were studio recordings, while Uli's farewell album with the band was the live
Tokyo Tapes, recorded at the Sun Plaza Hall in 1978.
Tokyo Tapes features such Scorpions' classics as
All Night Long, We'll Burn The Sky, Fly To The Rainbow and
In Trance. These have all been included on the European leg of Uli's 2017 tour.
After the Scorpions, Uli formed the three-piece
Electric Sun , who released two albums,
Earthquake and
Fire Wind, then an expanded line-up released
Beyond The Astral Skies. The band lasted seven years, playing their last concert at the Milwaukee Beer Fest, on July 4, 1985.
Uli devoted his time to developing the
Sky Guitar he had designed. It had an extended fingerboard which meant much higher top notes could be played. Inspired by classical music, and using the Sky Guitar, Uli composed some epic pieces of music, including concertos and symphonies.
After a 13 year absence from touring, in 1998 Uli joined
Joe Satriani and
Michael Schenker for European dates of the
G3 tour. In 2005, Uli played a reunion concert with the Scorpions in Colmar, France. It was the first time they had appeared on stage together since the days of
Tokyo Tapes. The show was followed by several other gigs in England, Germany and Greece. In 2006 the Scorpions, featuring featuring Uli, Michael Schenker and drummer Herrman Rarebell, performed at German Heavy Metal festival, the Wacken Open Air, in front of more than 80 000 people.
In 2013 Uli recorded
Scorpions Revisited, a double album consisting of his favourite early Scorpions songs. Several
Scorpions Revisited tours followed.
This year, Uli has been touring the world with his
Tokyo Tapes Revisited set. He's also recording a new album and has just announced a 2018 G3 tour with Joe Satriani and
John Petrucci and a north American tour on which he'll be playing Electric Sun material alongside
Tokyo Tapes highlights.
