This morning I had the pleasure of discovering Tranquilitea Cake and Tea Emporium. This hidden gem, located in Swinton, really does offer a piece of tranquillity, and I'm so pleased that a friend told me about this gorgeous café.

As soon as I walked in from the cold, I realised that this was a true home from home (or how I would like home to be if I didn't have three children wrecking the place.) The décor is carefully thought out, with pink patchwork throws, beautiful, vintage china and flowers on each table. There's a small area which sells little trinkets and there's a huge display of homemade cakes to choose from.

Although my friends opted for the more substantial poached eggs on toast which looked delicious, my sweet tooth couldn't resist and I selected, after much deliberation, the coffee and walnut cake. Since having kids I live on caffeine and sugar, so I am somewhat of an expert. Both the cappuccino and the cake were delicious.

It wouldn't have been my first place to take kids, because there were far too many breakables within reach, but after spending a couple of hours there, I could see it's definitely child-friendly. The staff are very relaxed. I saw one child run off with a china cup and they didn't bat an eyelid. There's also a small play area in the corner, perfect for keeping little ones occupied.

On the menu, there's everything from breakfasts and sandwiches to afternoon tea and light snacks. There's also a simple kids meal deal which consists of a sandwich or baked potato, cookie or muffin and milkshake or squash priced from £3.95 - £4.50. I really liked the fact that the kitchen was visible which I always find reassuring.

Tranquilitea also has a function room and holds Children's Cupcake Decorating Parties at weekends.

All in all, Tranquilitea offers everything you could want from a café - friendly service, good coffee, tasty food and beautiful surroundings. I'll certainly be back again - and next time I'll be bringing my two girls.
