I finally managed to get myself some tickets and head to the theatre. Sometime you can feel a bit guilty being a Londoner- you know there is all this amazing stuff to do but you can often lack time, effort and money to do it.
I had wanted to go to the theatre for some months now after hearing such raving reviews about Thriller: Live at the Lyric Theatre, located on Shaftsbury Avenue. And I was not at all disappointed after my months of procrastinating. Why hadn't I gone to see it sooner?!
I am yet to meet anyone who doesn't like at least Jackson song and this performance showcases why that it. It affirms how influential Michael Jackson has been throughout the years and how he has made a permanent mark on each musical sector from Mowtown, to Disco, Soul to Rap. The familiarity of every song speaks for itself- Jackson has created a musical legacy that will be celebrated for years to come.
It's not really a theatre show, or even a traditional musical- it is more like a concert as it lacks a storyline or dialogue- Unlike other 'pop-based' musicals like We Will Rock You or Mama Mia. Thriller is a non-stop show of Michael Jackson's hits throughout the ages- an anthology of his work starting from the days of Jackson 5. Think a live tribute concert with excellent dancers and a stage set to boot.
The only thing you can loosely liken to a plot is the fact that the show moves chronologically. Logically marking Michaels career progression and stating facts like album sales and producers along the way.
The show was created before Jackson's untimely death but now has been extended due to widespread interest. Everyone is moved by the legendary Pop star and this show is a great celebration of his iconography. From the vocal notes to the instantly recognisable dance moves to the outlandish costumes it is easy to see why the world was obsessed with Michael Jackson.
The dancers are specular with fast costume changes and dancing continuously for around 2 hours- they never flagged.
The songs are all sung live supported by a live band. There are 4 lead adult singers and one small boy who plays Jacko as a youngster. Each one of them pertains a quality that is eerily representative of Jackson's voice or movement on stage. Expect to be on your feet dancing and singing along- crowd participation is encouraged.
A truly wonderful show and celebration of somebody's iconic and successful career. A must-see for all Michael Jackson lovers but also if you like to see expert singers and dancers this one is for you. Show-stopping stuff.
Get your loafers and white socks out and start moonwalking to the Lyric theatre.
