Birmingham’s BOA Group is promising to take audiences along the yellow brick road with a new pantomime production of The Wizard of Oz this Christmas.

At the Old Rep Theatre between 26 November and 31 December, the show features all the much-loved characters including Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda the Good Witch and the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion.

The Wizard of Oz will be the ninth Christmas show produced by BOA Group at the Old Rep with previous productions including Pinocchio, The Wind in the Willows and Beauty and the Beast.

The show will be directed by Birmingham-born Lorna Laidlaw who has blended directing with a host of theatre and television acting performances including the roles of Mrs Tembe in Doctors and Aggie Bailey in Coronation Street.

She says: “I am thrilled to be bringing to the stage this production of The Wizard of Oz. A production full of fun and laughter for the whole family. The yellow brick road is waiting for you.”

Birmingham writer, actor and comedian Janice Connolly will be comedy dramaturg on the show. Best-known to local audiences for her comedy alter-ego Barbara Nice, Janice has also performed in the hit television show Phoenix Nights and has recently stepped down as artistic director of Birmingham-based Women and Theatre.

BOA Group chief executive Kate Tague said: “We are delighted to be announcing this year’s Christmas production is The Wizard of Oz. It will bring together leading talent from across the region alongside our own up-and-coming performers and crew. We are thrilled to be welcoming Lorna Laidlaw who will direct this year’s production.

“This family favourite will be a pantomime performance packed with popular songs and lots of audience interaction. Pantomime is a British tradition and Birmingham’s historic Old Rep Theatre is the perfect home for this year’s production. Get ready to laugh, shout and sing as we bring The Wizard of Oz to life this festive season. We can’t wait to see you there.”

British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted performances will take place on Tuesday 10 December at 10.15am and Sunday 29 December at 7pm. Relaxed performances are on Thursday 5 December at 10.15am and Friday 27 December at 2.30pm.
