Best little cafe/bar/gallery in North London
I admit, the cafe/bar/gallery The Step in Bowes Park, North London is very local to me so I have a vested interest in keeping it going. The reason why is that it's an oasis in a desert of good cafes in the area and I've therefore kept up with its development from before it opened.
From the start, the owners had big ideas for their new venture. They wanted to create a local cafe that would showcase local art and produce and it would be a cafe during the day, transforming into a cosy restaurant and local hub at night.
And they've done just that. Mothers with kids use it during the day, and in the evenings, the candles come out and a bottle of wine or two may even be consumed.
Fresh local food and drink is what's served in this cheerful cafe. Items like lamb, pea and spring onion pie, organic local bread with dipping oil and balsamic vinegar and homemade local lemon tarts are some of the choices.
Beverages include a very good coffee, beer brewed in Greenwich (Meantime) and apple and pear juice from Kent.
Kids are catered for with dinosaur shaped sandwiches and their own menu, and there's quite a range of choices on their brunch menu, including eggs benedict, bucks fizz and rarebit toast.
