A 16th century pub with a present as grand as its past

The Spaniards Inn

Up in Hampstead Heath there is a pub that dates back to 1585 and has a few stories to tell.

It is said that Keats wrote Ode to a Nightingale over a few drinks here and Charles Dickens wrote about the pub in The Pickwick Papers.

We pulled over during a Saturday afternoon drive with the sun shining unpredictably hot and our thirsts bursting for fine ale and some snacks.

As a result I didn't get any photos of the rather delightful wood panelled interior, I was much more focussed on the extensive garden.

We chose a couple of light and fruity ales and took our seats at table 30 to await our Scotch Egg and skin on chips.

The eggs were runny and delicious, I could have eaten a whole one. I love warm scotch eggs, something so much more than the pale imitation on the supermarket shelf.

As we were eating an Indian family to one side of us were served up a feast including what looked like the most decadent of Caesar Salads.

We were still peckish and it didn't take much convincing to order one for ourselves.

The garden is beautiful, the staff helpful and gracious, the beer plentiful and varied and the food delicious. Only the location would stop this being a regular haunt but if you can find a designated driver then I'd definitely make the journey.
