Ooh, it's really time for something a bit special today - a proper East London caff. That's right, the sort of place you have heard about in fable, but didn't know still existed - well I know where one of them is, in fact one of the best, and lucky you, because I'm about to tell you...
So, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Shepherdess. It has no website, if you want to contact them, you have to get their number and ring them up - old school style. It's also one of those places commonly referred to as a 'greasy spoon' - keep reading and I'll tell you what that means...
Located not too far from Old Street tube, if you take a little wander along City Road you will come across it before too long. Once inside and sat, have a look around, it might be recognisable as this place has appeared in films, music videos...even Jamie Oliver is a visitor.
Now for the biggest problem you will face - what to order - the menu is seriously big. There is everything from full English breakfasts (of which there are a variety to choose from), and you can even build your own, to make your choice just that much more tricky. Should that not appeal - take a further look down the menu - there is lasagna, three egg omelettes, jacket potatoes, salads...you're starting to get the idea I guess.
As this is a traditional cafe, don't expect it to stay open late - breakfast and lunch are the times to visit - expect the tables to be cleared and the doors locked long before people start finishing work and heading for the tubes, but if you have got the luxury of being able to get along on a weekday, or more likely on a Saturday, enjoy - it's cheap, cheerful and will fill your belly - seriously, what more could you want than that?
