Award-winning Canadian trio support Passenger on UK tour
If you are seeing Passenger in concert over the next few weeks make sure you arrive at the venue in time to see support act The Once.
The Newfoundland-based threesome have been making waves in their native Canada, collecting a trio of Canadian Folk Music Awards and earning a Juno nomination for best Roots/Traditional album for their second release, Row Upon Row Of The People They Know.
They made their first album in 2009, the result of a stranger at one of their shows giving them $5,000 to record the music he'd heard. It was a great success, as was follow-up, Row Upon Row Of The People They Know, for which they received the Juno nomination.
A Christmas CD was released in 2012, then Nettwerk Records' boss Terry McBride saw them perform at the Vancouver CelticFest and signed them to make Departures.
Their first two albums consisted mainly of traditional folk songs or reworked tunes by Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Queen and the Strawbs. Departures, however, features more original compositions.
Geraldine says it reflects the group "feeling more confident to do what we want" but there are still some interesting covers including the Elvis Presley hit Can't Help Falling In Love and the Newfoundland standard, Sonny's Dream.
