'' in Herongate is a quaint and quirky pub located in the heart of the Essex countryside. This stand-out, traditionally styled building is known to date from the early 16th century and the pub has been serving great food for hundreds of years.
Walking into this charming building after a long walk in the picturesque countryside is like entering your second home with its warm and welcoming traditional features such as the low-beamed ceilings and exposed fireplaces. All of the fireplaces were blazing when we arrived, which was like a slice of heaven after being outside in the freezing cold for hours. One thing I particularly loved and spotted straight away when first entering was the quirky artwork hanging on the walls.
The pub offers a huge variety of seasonal beers and wines and is renowned for its ever changing real ale selection. The pub also offer their own "Olde Dog IPA" brewed by local award winning brewery Crouch Vale. Best of all, there is a beautiful beer garden to enjoy in the summer months, which overlooks the rolling hills of Henongate.
After a long walk exploring the Essex countryside this was the perfect place to stop for lunch with the dog. Being named '' the pub and restaurant allow well behaved dogs to join their owners in a section of the building called "The Doghouse". It was nice to see the whole family being able to enjoy their Sunday lunch together, including the family dog!
During our visit to the restaurant we ordered the white bait with granary bread to start, which was fresh from Mersea Island. The fish tasted was battered to perfection and was simply delicious. Choosing our main dishes was difficult but for our main we choice the steak baguette and chicken ceaser baguette, which was served with chunky chips on either white or granary bread. The bread tasted fresh out of the local bakery and the meat was divine. Other dishes on the menu looked really tempting and made us want to return again. Specialties were also displayed on chalkboards throughout the restaurant.
Overall, '' is the ideal place for a light lunch, romantic dinner or even a special occasion. The atmosphere of this family owned pub is extremely friendly as it has been run by the same family for over 30 years and this is what makes it one-of-a-kind.
