The Nightingales play a hometown gig at Birmingham's
O2 Academy on April 30, 2022, as part of a UK tour.
The band was the subject of the critically acclaimed feature film documentary,
King Rocker
, which was written and presented by stand-up comedian
Stewart Lee and directed by
Michael Cumming . It had its TV premiere on
Sky Arts in February 2021, and received its theatrical premiere in June 2021.
The Nightingales formed in 1979 from the ashes of Birmingham's original punk group,
The Prefects , who had been part of
The Clash 's White Riot Tour.
Comprising an ever-fluctuating line-up, based around lyricist/singer
Robert Lloyd , they enjoyed cult status in the early 1980s and were championed by
John Peel , for whom they recorded many radio sessions. They released a bunch of singles and three albums and regularly toured the UK and Northern Europe, as headliners and support acts to performers as diverse as Bo Diddley and Nico.
In the late '80s, The Nightingales stopped working but, following the occasional gig between times, they re-grouped in 2004, arriving at the current line-up, of Lloyd, Andreas Schmid from
Faust on bass, ex Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson and guitarist James Smith, who Lloyd had spotted playing with
Damo Suzuki .
Since restarting, the group has been more productive than ever, releasing seven 7&
#8243 ; vinyl singles, a 10" EP, two 6-song mini albums and eight full-length studio albums. Their album,
Four Against Fate, was released in May 2020, and a split single with Stewart Lee was made available last April, alongside a deluxe double LP reissue of the band's first album,
Pigs On Purpose.
Planned for release in 2022 is the original
King Rocker soundtrack album, a remix 12" single, a deluxe double album reissue of
Hysterics and the
King Rocker DVD.
A new album is due in September 2022 and the group will be supporting it with another headline UK tour.
