As we enter June, the summer movie season is already in full swing, bringing a range of exciting new releases to look forward to. Cinephiles can expect highly anticipated sequels like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, as well as independent treasures such as Pretty Red Dress and Reality. Here are 10 movies you won’t want to miss this month:
1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Miles Morales will return to the screens this June in the sequel to the much-loved 2018 animated adventure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As with the recent live-action Spider-Man films, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sees characters exploring the multiverse. Miles Morales will once again be joined by Spider-Gwen (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld), along with a host of new characters, such as Spider-Man India (voiced by Karan Soni), and the futuristic version of Spider-Man. Don’t miss Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse when it swings into cinemas on June 2nd.
2. The Boogeyman
If you’re a horror fan, then this is the film for you. Head to your local cinema on June 2nd to see Rob Savage’s highly anticipated The Boogeyman. Based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name, the film was initially slated for a Hulu release, but it’ll now be shown on the big screen instead. The Boogeyman has been hailed as “one of the scariest films” in a long time by one of its stars, David Dastmalchian, and is bound to keep you on the edge of your seat.
3. Chevalier
Another film that has been met with largely positive reviews from critics is Chevalier, a biographical drama directed by Steven Williams (who produced Watchman). The film is inspired by the true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, who became one of France’s most celebrated composer. The film delves into his relationships with Marie Antoinette and Marie-Josephine. Kelvin Harrison Jr. steps into the role of Bologne, with supporting performances from Samara Weaving, Minnie Driver and Lucy Boynton. Watch Chevalier in cinemas from June 9th.
4. No Hard Feelings
Pretty much anything Jennifer Lawrence is in is worth a watch, and No Hard Feelings is no exception. Directed by Gene Stupnitsky (Good Boys), the film sees Jennifer Lawrence as a delivery driver who resorts to desperate measures in an attempt to make ends meet. While the film has unfortunately been criticised for promoting grooming, it still looks like an entertaining comedy. No Hard Feelings will be released on June 23rd. If you can’t wait until then, catch a sneak peek of No Hard Feelings from its trailer:
5. Asteroid City
One of the most prolific directors of this century, Wes Anderson, will be releasing his eleventh film Asteroid City towards the end of this month. Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke, Tilda Swinton, Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson, Asteroid City is one of the unmissable cinematic events of the year. Judging by the trailer, Asteroid City looks like another zany film from Wes Anderson, set in a fictional American desert town that hosts a Junior Stargazer convention. Asteroid City hits the big screen on June 23rd.
6. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Harrison Ford is back as Indiana Jones for the fifth – and final – time. Set in the 1960s, Indiana Jones will have to battle the Nazis, alongside his goddaughter Helena (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge). The rest of the cast includes Antonio Banderas, Mads Mikkelson and more. James Mangold, who is known for Ford vs Ferrari (2019) and Logan (2017), replaces Steven Spielberg as the director. If the trailer is anything to go by, Indiana Jones fans are in for an exhilarating ride. Catch it in cinemas on June 30th.
7. The Perfect Find
Landing on Netflix later in June, The Perfect Find is a romantic comedy starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers. Adapted from Tia Williams’ bestselling book, the film follows former fashion designer Jenna Jones who is eager for a fresh start. After landing a job with her old rival, Jenna’s life becomes even more complicated. The Perfect Find follows in the footsteps of the likes of classics such as Roman Holiday (1953) and Carmen Jones, (1954), and is guaranteed to have audiences laughing out loud. Mark your calendars for June 23rd.
8. Pretty Red Dress
Alexandra Burke, who shot to stardom after winning the X Factor in 2008, has made her film debut in Pretty Red Dress, which premiered at the BFI London Film Festival at the end of last year and will finally be released to the public in June. Directed by Dionne Edwards, Pretty Red Dress is a London-based family drama, featuring a soundtrack comprised of Tina Turner songs. In the film, Travis (Natey Jones) has just been released from prison, and finds out that everything’s changed during his absence. While his girlfriend Candice (Alexandra Burke) is planning to audition for a musical, teenage daughter Kenisha is struggling in school and has a strained relationship with her mother. In an attempt to make amends with his family, Travis buys Candice her dream dress, only for it to create even more problems. The film has been compared to the musical Kinky Boots, due to its intimate portrayal of masculinity. See Pretty Red Dress in cinemas from June 16th.
9. Reality
Directed by American filmmaker Tina Satter, Reality stars Sydney Sweeney, who is best known for her breakout role as Cassie in the TV series Euphoria. The film premiered at Berlinale Festival to critical acclaim, and boasts a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 100%, making it one of the standout films from the event. Adapted from the FBI interrogation transcript of American intelligence whistleblower Reality Winner, Reality is a tense film that sheds light on an important event in US history. Variety film critic Jessica Kiang praised Sydney's performance in the film, stating that "Sydney's every flicker of emotion, micro-reaction, evasion and retraction, is utterly believable". Reality will be released on June 2nd.
