A small window into J.R.R Tolkien's fantasy world of elves, orcs and hobbits has opened in Staffordshire as part of an exciting new exhibition. The Magic of Middle-Earth, which is currently being displayed at
The Hub at St Mary's in Lichfield, celebrates Tolkien's incredible fantasy world and the generations of creators it has influenced. The free exhibition takes visitors on a journey beyond the
Lord of the Rings and
Hobbit books to explore their expansive artistic legacy. The Magic of Middle-Earth contains more than 200 items that are a must-see for fans of fantasy, and
Lord of the Rings in particular. Visitors to The Hub are greeted with a large poster of Sir Ian McKellen as the wizard Gandalf alongside an introductory note which explains that the exhibition seeks to 'curate and celebrate' Tolkien's artistic legacy.
The various objects and artworks on display allow fans of Tolkien's books to immerse themselves in the world of Middle-Earth, while also revealing some of the many versions and interpretations since the author penned those famous words "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit…" Visitors to The Magic of Middle-Earth exhibition can discover fabulous dioramas - miniature models with figures representing scenes - stunning paintings of dragons, ents and elves, incredible sculptures, even Middle-earth themed Lego sets. At the same time, there is plenty of information that will impress the most knowledgeable
Lord of the Rings fan, such as The Beatles came close to creating a concept album and movie based on the books at the height of their fame. This exciting exhibition, which continues in Lichfield until December 11, also contains related items such as video games and film posters.
Collector Matt Fox makes it clear that the exhibition has not been prepared, approved or licensed by the estate of J.R.R Tolkien or any of its assignees. However, unofficial or not, a visit still leaves you yearning to watch the
Lord of the Rings films all over again. Whether a little halfling or a wizened wizard, fans of fantasy will not want to miss it.
The Magic of Middle-Earth exhibition runs at The Hub at St Marys until December 11. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30am to 4pm and on selected Sundays. Booking is advised for weekends and the half-term holiday but not required at all other times. Although the exhibition is free, donations are welcomed. The Hub at St Mary's is a registered charity and not for profit coffee shop. For more information visit
