The impact of Shakespeare on Bollywood movies will be explored in a new documentary to be screened at Birmingham Rep. Created by DESIblitz, an online magazine that explores and promotes South Asian arts, features Indian film experts and enthusiasts discussing how The Bard has inspired scripts and how Bollywood portrayals of Indian culture provide new interpretations of Shakespeare.

The project is in collaboration with the 'Everything to Everybody' Project which aims to raise awareness of Birmingham's Shakespeare Memorial Library.

Indi Deol of DESIblitz explained: "This new documentary plays a significant role in documenting and educating people from all backgrounds about the role that Shakespeare played in shaping the Bollywood film industry. We are excited to be screening our film at The Rep on the 20 October and to be working closely with our project partners, Everything to Everybody, to strengthen the Shakespeare collection."

The Birmingham Shakespeare Memorial Library contains works in more than 90 languages, including nearly 100 South Asian translations, adaptations and modernisations. From Indian theatres performing Shakespeare during the colonial era to modern blockbuster hits, Shakespeare's plays have constantly inspired Indian theatre and filmmakers to tell their own stories.

As part of the 'Everything to Everybody' Project and as an accompaniment to the documentary, DESIblitz has also curated an exhibition in response to the Shakespeare Collection. Exploring how Shakespeare has influenced Bollywood cinema, the exhibition is in the Shakespeare Memorial Room in the Library of Birmingham until 28 October 2022.

Professor Ewan Fernie, Project Director 'Everything to Everybody' Project, said: "There is Tamil Shakespeare in Birmingham's great Shakespeare collection dating back to the 1870s. There is also a Punjabi Othello and material in many other South Asian languages. We're delighted that partners such as DESIblitz are connecting with and revitalising the collection, which after all belongs to all the people of the city and should therefore reflect all of its people."

The 'Everything to Everybody' Project is a collaboration between the University of Birmingham and Birmingham City Council, with funding contributed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and History West Midlands. The project also includes the free Everything to Everybody: Your Shakespeare, Your Culture exhibition at the Library of Birmingham until November 2022.

will be screened on 20 October at 8pm, for tickets seehttps://www.birmingham-rep.co.uk/ and for more information on the 'Everything to Everybody' Project see www.everythingtoeverybody.bham.ac.uk
