Perfectly situated between the main market halls and the events space of Grainger Market , The French Oven Bakery is a patisserie and bakery offering everything from bread and pies to cakes and sweet slices.



Norman, the manager, has assembled a diverse team of bakers and bread-makers, lead by Terry and Bogdan. Though the array of goods is enough to tempt any passer-by, to me, the most impressive thing is not what is the glass cases but what I learned about the strong community spirit of this tiny bakery with a big heart.


The French Oven Bakery is committed to the advancement of all those who need a hand in lifting their own skills or perhaps getting their lives to a better place. As their new website explains ; "Throughout the year we offer a steady stream of work experience to anyone who would like our help. Anything from taster days to 3 months of confidence and skills building. In the last year alone we have had over 25 people come through to us from school work experience programs, crisis, reemploy, young carers & many more."



My first visit was an accidental one, when I was passing through Grainger Market and their Rice Krispy Cake caught my eye! Only 90p, it was money well spent to keep my rumbling stomach at bay while I continued shopping.

There is little to keep anyone away from this beautiful bakery - with locally-sourced ingredients, handmade foods and a strong community and environmental ethic I believe it is a business well worth your time and support. I look forward to my next Rice Krispy treat!

The French Oven Bakery is open Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 5:30pm and Saturday 9:00am to 6:00pm.
