Head over to Islington on a Saturday and you will find a super cute little passage, containing an array of tucked away milkshake bars, cafes and bistros. One such gasto venue that you may be intrigued by along your travels is The Elk In The Woods.
Entering this venue is like embarking into your great grandparents den (that is if they were avid hunters), you are greeted with a stag head, which takes up half the wall, staring at you with its glass eyes. In keeping with the look and feel of the venue, the decor is very English woodsman esk, where you can envisage a few dozen men sitting around drinking whiskey and smoking cigars. However, flash to the present and you will see an eclectic mix of up-market East-siders looking for a quick escape from the streets to recoup and recharge.
The Elk In The Woods has an extensive range of cocktails, wines and beers, not to mention a great grazing menu taking you through from breakfast to dinner and everywhere in between.
I headed to this establishment with a friend after our gym session and were seated at the communal back table, which was quite cosy. After perusing the menu my friend and I decided to share one of their delicious sandwiches. We selected the
vegetarian, char-grilled eggplant and zucchini sarnie with rich homemade tomato sauce, mint, basil, hot mozzarella on rosemart and sea salt focaccia and teamed this with a much needed latte.
Hands down, it was a good choice to share the focaccia as it was quite generous in its serving, however the actual contents was not that crash hot. The sandwich lacked that little bit of moistness, (unfortunately the tea-spoon-of-white-sauce did not suffice) that you would otherwise get from a condiment such as an aioli or dijon mustard, that would take that sandwich from good to great.
The service was good and the venue had a cosy ambience, which made it pleasurable for us both. Next you are in Islington head to Camden Passage and see if you can be seated next to a stag.
