Children and adults are invited to the launch of a new picture book and storytelling EP written by Birmingham author and spoken word artist Sophina Jagot, AKA Brwn Girl in the Ring.

The Day the StarTribe Made a Magical Cake is aimed at youngsters aged 6-11 and tells the story of a Tree-Dwelling Elf and her four friends who are determined to restore their forest home. But when they come up with a clever plan, it changes the course of their adventure forever in a tale which also covers themes of mental health.

The Day the StarTribe Made a Magical Cake audio book has been created in collaboration with Reisz ‘Odd Priest’ Amos who worked on composition and arrangement and DJ Steady Steadman who led on sound design. The printed book illustrations are by Malikah Holder. Sophina also received mentoring support from Birmingham’s Poet Laureate Jasmine Gardosi and audiobook expert AsaleSol Young.

The story was further developed through school workshops with 120 children at Clifton Primary School in Birmingham, and family workshops at West Bromwich Central Library, Wednesbury Library and Thimblemill Library in Smethwick.

Sophina said: “When I wrote this story in 2020 as a way to lose myself in a woodland fantasy, I never imagined that I’d have the chance to see the characters brought to life through the worlds that Malikah, Reisz and Steady have created. I’m so excited to share my first book with these beautiful illustrations and the musical journey - Tree-Dwelling Elf loves her music and something tells me she’d be listening to the storytelling EP every day!”

The book launches in November with a listening party including a Q&A with the writer and creative team plus a book signing at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry on 7 November. This is followed by an interactive book launch for families at the Bear Bookshop in Bearwood on 9 November.

Tickets for the listening party at the Belgrade are free but must be booked in advance. For tickets and more information on the book see here.
