In terms of murder mysteries, the Classic Thriller Theatre Company is building up quite a reputation for itself and now heads to Glasgow with a thriller by renowned crime writer Edgar Wallace.
The Case of the Frightened Lady is a quaint old-fashioned whodunnit set in the 1930's with the glamour and costumes that come with that decade.
It opens at
Glasgow's Theatre Royal on 2 October and stays there until 6 October.
There's a cast of well-known faces led by former
EastEnders actor John Partridge. He is playing Inspector Tanner who is sent to uncover a murderer as the body count rises.
The cast has changed during the tour and, in Glasgow, it will include an excellent Deborah Grant from
Not Going Out as the domineering mother and Phillip Lowrie, best known for playing Dennis Tanner in
Coronation Street. There is also Scarlett Archer from
Emmerdale, Matt Barber from
Downton Abbey and Robert Duncan, best known for
Drop The Dead Donkey.
Although the company's origins were as The Agatha Christie Company, it changed its name and has been touring since with successful crowd-pleasers including
Ruth Rendell's A Judgement in Stone and
Rehearsal For Murder in recent years.
I caught this latest murder mystery early on during the tour at Malvern Theatres and it's got plenty to please those who love nothing more than to settle down for an episode of
Lewis or
Poirot on TV.
The scenery impresses even though there is just the one set of a great hall in a stately home. Through two and a quarter hours, the action follows the well-known formula of various suspects gathering under the scrutiny of Chief Supt Tanner and his Detective Sergeant Edward Totti following a murder.
With eccentric characters and mysterious, sometimes comical, developments taking place, it's sure to pull in the crowds for those wanting an easy piece of escapism.
