The first and best museum in the world

You know this place, even if you have never been there. For many people it is the place you think of when you think of 'museum'. The world comes here to know about the history of the world we live in. It is, of course, the British Museum.

The museum was the first of its kind when it was created all the way back in 1753 - a public museum for those interested in the world around them. Things have changed a lot from that time until now - namely the building, and visitor numbers (which has grown from 5,000 people a year to today's figures at a massive 6 million). What hasn't changed though is the curiosity towards the exhibits, and the fact that it is still free.

Realistically, you would need well over a day to see all of the exhibits, and to really take everything in would be much longer than that - so let me give you some tasters to start off with. The Rosetta Stone is as important an exhibit as you could hope to find - along with the Egyptian tombs and the Chinese ceramics - but of course, this is the very tip of a very large iceberg - maybe you would be better off looking through the important exhibits first to get a feel for the museum...

As well as the permanent collection, there is also a program of temporary exhibitions, which look at specific collections or periods of history in a slightly different way.

There are shops, of course, but also restaurants and cafes within the museum itself - which you will be very thankful for once you really appreciate the size of the museum building. Quite simply no trip to London should be without a visit here...
