In a city renowned for great nights out, the Botanist is the go-to place in Newcastle for a classy night. I went once during the week and again on a Friday and the experiences could not have been more different.

At first glance, the Botanist is stunning - beautifully decorated with lights, flowers and rustic decor. The staff are very polite and even during the week, it is busy - a clear marker of a good place.

The cocktails were undoubtedly lovely on both nights, but the atmosphere on the Friday evening was extremely different from the Wednesday evening, which is admittedly unsurprising.

It's not a shock to see bouncers outside a bar in Newcastle, but it is a shock to think we might need them in a place that charges £10 a cocktail. The live music on Friday evening was fantastic, but I didn't feel very safe, although I did on the Wednesday evening, because the bar was so rowdy. It was strange because typically clubs are more rowdy than bars.

My advice would be to go on a weekday and try a watermelon martini; unfortunately, if I hadn't gone on Friday evening this would be a glowing review.
