This is really, really not what seems. If you look at the name, you may think I am about to tell you about a group that meets every week to discuss the next Agatha Christie - couldn't be further from the truth in fact. The Book Club is actually one of the hippest bars you will find in one of the hippest areas of London.
True, it does mean that this place can get pretty full - and the fashions you are likely to encounter could mean you feel a little, well, normal - but stick with it, as there is a lot to recommend.
The thing that brings the flocks to this little side street of Old Street is the amount of events they have on, with nearly every evening full of innovative and interesting things to see and do - some you may be interested in include an Electro Swing music evening and King Pong ( a ping pong tournament).
Food is high on the priorities too. With everything from light bites to platters you can share with your friends, there is no reason at all for you to go hungry. Even if you're passing on your lunch break - guess what - they've got that covered too...
Now, about the Ping Pong - this has to be one of my favourite reasons to visit. If you take a wander down the stairs from the main bar, you'll find a little basement room with a wall of paddles. Pick one up and challenge somebody to a game - you'll enjoy it more than you initially think you will, I'm sure.
Finally, if you feel that all of this is a little beneath you, and that you would rather take a look around a gallery than hang out in bars - well, they've got something for you too - they run a regularly-changing programme of art works, which adorn walls and spaces within the main bar take a look at the past artists to get an idea...
With all this going on, not to mention music and dj's at the weekend - why haven't you been here already?
