The Basingstoke Tamil community will be holding a celebration for Thai Pongal that will celebrate and embrace Tamil culture. The event will feature Thai Pongal traditions and other cultural activities.
The Thai Pongal celebrations are being held on January 20th at the Sycamore Halls Community Centre. The event is free, but you can register for it through
Eventbrite or by emailing
[email protected].
The event will feature a traditional Pongal ceremony. Thai Pongal is a festival that celebrates the harvest and is dedicated to the Sun God - Surya. The traditional ceremony features the boiling of rice in a pot of milk. As the milk begins to boil and then bubble over more rice is added. While this is being done, others blow on a conch shell and recite a chant for good harvest. This pongal then forms the centre of the Thai Pongal feast.
There will be a vegetarian lunch, performances by Tamil school children and other traditional activities. This event is aimed at people who are members of the Tamil community in Basingstoke and Hampshire and it provides an opportunity to help connect children who have grown up in Britain to their Tamil culture. You're encouraged to wear your best traditional clothes.
Spaces are limited so registering is necessary. Sycamore Halls Community Centre is located on Sycamore Way in Basingstoke and is about 30 miles outside of Southampton.
