Taylors are a gourmet sandwich and deli company with eight different locations across Oxford. I recently popped into their shop in Oxford's busy Summertown for a quick bite to eat.

Independent and family run are two of the best phrases when it comes to good food as it usually means a passion for what's made and served and a more personal interest than you find with large chains.

The Summertown shop has been renovated to increase the cafe and deli area and no wonder as it was bustling, lively and fast paced when I stopped one midweek lunchtime. Customers ranged from laid back students to smartly dressed business types and construction workers in bright yellow fluorescent tops. Taylors certainly has something to meet everyone's tastes and the common requirement of tasty food at reasonable prices.

They follow a set of ethics which includes season, local and organic produce. Coffee from Fairtrade hand roasted beans, free range eggs, and locally reared British pigs providing the bacon and pork.

I opted for a falafel and houmous sandwich. This is a bit of a test from me as I'm picky about my falafel having been spoilt by succulent ones on many trips to Egypt. I find they can often be a bit dry when I've bought them in this country. Well, Taylors passed the test with moist falafel and a generous amount of houmous and salad. The seeded baguette had just the right amount of crusty crunch and soft dough. I took the option of having my sandwich heated which due to VAT regulations means it was slightly more expensive but definitely worth it.

Lunch options are not restricted to sandwiches and there was also a hot counter with chilli con carne, green Thai curry, sausage rolls and the soup of the day. You can eat in on long wooden benches or take a seat at the window to watch the world go by. Alternatively the food is available as a takeaway too.

Available in Summertown (as well as the Covered Market and the shop on Woodstock Road) is Fasta Pasta. Hot and fresh you just choose your pasta type then one of at least ten sauces and a garnish. Prices range from £2.95 to £4.25 a carton.

While stopping in for a bite to eat or grabbing some pasta on the go, it's very tempting to select a few things from their deli. This is a great place to pick up some fresh and local artisan bread, jams, chutneys and cheeses. When I visited they had just got in Vacherin Mont D'or, an Alpine cheese which they describe as "soft, rich and seasonal, made with the richest cows milk".

If you're looking for a tasty sandwich, hot lunch, deli items or Fasta Pasta then pop into Taylors of Oxford.
