From St George and the Dragon to Cinema Under the Stars
People in Tamworth are being urged to get their 2019 diaries out ready to fill in a range of popular outdoor events taking place on dates throughout the year. Dragons, jousting, cinema under the stars, family fun, live music and fireworks are all back as part of Tamworth Borough Council's 2019 programme of outdoor events. The council's Arts & Events team has been working hard to create another fantastic programme of entertainment for Tamworth residents and visitors to the area to enjoy this year. The outdoor events programme kicks off on Saturday 20 April with the return of the massive St George's Day extravaganza in the Castle Grounds. This huge family event attracts thousands of visitors for wall-to-wall medieval-themed fun, including live jousts, dragons, a treasure trail, a living history encampment and endless family activities.
Jousting forms part of the St George's Day event at Tamworth Castle
Outdoor theatre will be back in Dosthill Park on Sunday 16 June for a fourth year with an award-winning performance provided by Quantum Theatre. Dosthill Park will provide a perfect setting for a delightful adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows, a heart-warming tale of friendship and adventure perfect for the whole family. There will also be a return to the summer bandstand concerts which will take place from June to September in the historic Tamworth Castle Grounds involving local bands, singers and musicians performing a series of weekend shows. The Castle Grounds are also the venue for the Outdoor Cinema which takes place under the skies on Saturday 10 August in front of a big screen. This is followed by the equally popular We Love Tamworth event on Saturday 14 September, bringing fairground rides, stalls, games, inflatables, a children's zone and much more to the Castle Grounds.
Later in the year sees the return of the free fireworks event on Saturday 2 November with an evening of fun and entertainment, including fire performers, face painting, a sparkler zone, family activities, food stalls, fairground rides and an impressive display of fireworks. And the year's events will culminate in the Christmas Lights Switch On taking place on Sunday 24 November with a programme of live music, market stalls, a lantern parade, St Editha's Church Christmas Tree Festival, and dance performances.
