Residents in the Tamworth borough of Staffordshire are being invited to join a 'virtual bloom' tour of some of the floral planting schemes in the area. The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in the traditional Tamworth in Bloom event, due to have taken place this summer, being cancelled. But, instead, Tamworth Borough Council is asking local people to go online and explore planting that has taken place across the borough, as well as learn about local community projects which have started, pick up some gardening 'tips'; and enjoy a recap on previous winning Tamworth in Bloom displays. Last year saw the council celebrate its 10th year of winning gold with the theme of 'Blooming Tamworth' More than just flowers. The focus was on celebrating everything that is great about Tamworth. People can take part in the Blooming Tamworth 'virtual' tour for a week, starting on July 14, via the council's social media platforms.

This year's theme never got launched. However, Street Scene have nevertheless been able to plant the flower beds in the Castle Grounds and landscape the area around the Tamworth Assembly Rooms in a bid to make these areas attractive for locals and visitors to enjoy when visiting the town this summer. Communities and groups, such as the volunteers who take care of Tamworth's local nature reserves, together with businesses and individuals, have also been getting involved with some exciting new projects that involve more than just planting or hanging baskets. It is hoped to share these during the 'virtual tour'. Councillor John Chesworth, Cabinet member for Culture and Operational Services, said: "There are many things to be proud of in Tamworth and I'm delighted to see residents and business have been uniting together during lockdown and making their open spaces attractive for people to enjoy when out walking and exercising. We hope that people will enjoy our week of 'virtual bloom' which will take place from July 14 on the Tamworth Arts and Events and council Facebook pages and twitter."
