Watch history come to life in a fairytale castle
Almost hidden from view, and sitting alongside modern tower blocks, the impressive Tamworth Castle offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to step back in time through more than 900 years of history.

The medieval motte and bailey castle is dominated by an imposing tower, built around 1180 and still standing today to almost its original height of 16 metres, or more than 50 feet.

Visitors to Tamworth Castle will be able to see how the Saxons, Normans, Tudors and Victorians all shaped the history of this unique building.

There are more than 15 splendid rooms to discover, including the grand Dining Room, which has been laid out for a Tudor feast, and the Day Parlour where nobles would gather before eating.

You can also have fun exploring the new Castle Armoury with its interactive displays, part of a 1.6 million Heritage Lottery Fund investment, which gives younger visitors a chance to get some unique hands-on experience trying on the armour.

If you then go upstairs, the previous attic bedrooms have been transformed into the Tamworth Story - a hugely interesting display on the history of Tamworth including its Saxon roots.

As long as you don't mind heights, you can look out from the Tower to the Castle Grounds below,, then go back down to the wood panelled Lady's Chamber which is said to be inhabited by a ghost.
From there, visitors are able to cross the parapet into the Elizabethan wing before going forward in time again to the Victorian period with rooms depicting life for the last inhabitants of Tamworth Castle.

There are plenty of activities and events for visitors of all ages to enjoy, whether trying your hand at traditional tasks such as domestic chores or listening to stories of knights, dragons and princesses.

A number of items from the famous Staffordshire Hoard, dug up not a million miles away, are also on permanent display, together with specially made replica items commissioned by the castle.
