As a species, we are on an ongoing mission to improve ourselves. Perfection is the ultimate goal, but ultimately unreachable. While we have to accept our human limitations, we should never stop trying to better ourselves, and it is in an exhibition by the artists Shan Hur and Aron Demetz that they explore this fine balance.
On display until the 5th June, Tainted, is the latest exhibit at the Gazelli Art House in Mayfair.
In his sculptures, the Italian artist Aron Demetz points out the dependency man has on his surroundings by carving the human figure out of wood. While some of his pieces are smooth and finely finished, others are rough cut and full of splintered edges, showing how our connection with the world is not always as harmonious as we would like.
Shan Hur's installations, on the other hand, depict knotted coulumns and man made objects like pottery stuck inside walls. It suggests that we are stuck, bound by the laws of nature, and unable to escape.
