A magical forest experience in a Duke's garden - you can't get more enchanted than that

It's that time of year again - as you walk down your local high street you will probably notice the lurid lights twinkling away above you. The fluorescent stars burning the back of your retinas, the snowman raising and putting the top hat back onto his lit up round head. And what's more....

Now I should point out to you all, before you think the next words to come out of my mouth are 'Bah, humbug', that I do actually like Xmas - and I am in favour of the decorations that really make this time of year - but I am actually going to suggest somewhere much more worthy of your attention - in fact I think you will be quite happy I did.

If it's lights you want to see, I thoroughly recommend you visit the rather wonderful Enchanted Woodland. Set in Syon Park, which is actually part of the lands owned by the Duke of Northumberland, in this his London home - you couldn't wish for a prettier location for one of the best light displays you are likely to see around these parts.

Unfortunately the lights are now over for 2013, but let this prepare you for next year - effectively everything takes place around the lake that runs through the gardens, and you trace the pathway that goes around it, with highlights including trees lighting up in chorus to classsical music, a dragon seemingly waking up from the roots of a tree, and a little fairy grotto, where voices seem to flit around you suggesting some form of magical presence at work. The tour ends in the conservatory, with a lightshow worthy of a rock concert, or a rather large nightclub. With all this on offer this year, who knows what will be on show the next?

Whatever you do, save a trip for 2014 - but be warned - it will make those lights on your high street seem even worse...
