To paraphrase Dorothy: 'There is no place like London.' I hope I can convince you of that here. Also check out my blog at damselwithadulcimer.wordpress.com and my theatre reviews at www.playstosee.com

Carla Knox gave up her job as a solicitor in the City and opened Sweet Memories in Church Street Twickenham in November 2009. A little over a year later she moved down to 47 Church Street, where she sells the most amazing retro sweeties. Her imprint is everywhere, from the eye catching black and white colour scheme, which includes black and white striped paper bags for weighing out the sweets, black and white aprons for the staff and seasonally themed windows.

The current window theme is ice cream and she explained how she'd spent ages gluing and sticking sweets into ice cream tubs and cornets for the window display. This ties in beautifully with her new range of ice cream, supplied by Gelateria Danieli in nearby Richmond, and highly recommended by Jon at the Eel Pie.

As well as supporting local businesses, Carla has sourced organic fair trade chocolate from both Coco Loco in West Sussex and Choc Affair in York. There are also ranges of sugar free goodies for those who can't, or don't want to, suck on the sugar the way we baby boomers used to and kept dentists drilling away happily.

She is also very fussy about her retro ranges and samples everything she sells. In addition Carla invites customers to contribute feedback and looks for alternative sources of supply if they don't approve. I've been told by other traders in Church Street that her shop is often crammed full with grownups, as well as children. It seems that sweet teeth never change as her best-selling lines are Rhubarb and Custard, Pear Drops, Pineapple Chunks and Flying Saucers. I would also like to publicly thank Carla for the free bag of Chocolate Cinder Toffee that kept me going during my drive home.

Hampers, vanity cases and gift jars can be filled to order for special gifts and Carla also supplies corporate gifts and wedding favours. The locals must be very proud of Sweet Memories as Richmond Business Awards gave the shop The People's Choice Award for last year. You're as old as you feel, and Sweet Memories will make you think you've returned to second childhood.
