A Staffordshire town's St George’s Day extravaganza is back for 2024 with an exciting new line-up of entertainment filled with medieval-themed fun for the whole family on Saturday 20 April. The free annual festival, held in Tamworth from 11am to 5pm, is one of the highlights of Tamworth Borough Council’s widespread calendar of outdoor events, drawing thousands of visitors from across the country. The St George's Day event will take place in the grounds of medieval Tamworth Castle , with the line-up including a host of festival favourites from jousting, archery and falconry displays to a living history camp, fairground rides and children’s activities. For this year’s programme, visitors of all ages are also invited to meet Epico the dragon.

The Grand Medieval Joust is back by popular demand. Audiences will be able to watch the action unfold as St George competes with knights on horseback as they take to the main arena to show off their jousting skills. Fun displays are guaranteed, full of laughs and action, trick riding and stunts, with skilled performances from stunning horses and knights in shining armour. Throughout the day knights will also demonstrate the variety of weapons and combat methods used during medieval skirmishes.

Other entertainment and activities for the whole family include workshops, displays, entertainment and a medieval encampment featuring equipment and living history demonstrations evident during the period. A large array of different traditional children’s games will include post-mills, hobby horses, peg dolls, ball and cup, stilts, quoits and Nine Men’s Morris. The Community Games are also being held in the grounds offering various activities from local providers and clubs. They will bring together families in a friendly setting, to create opportunities for both adults and children to try different sporting activities regardless of age or ability.

Councillor Tina Clements, Portfolio Holder for Engagement, Leisure and Events at Tamworth council, said: “The St George’s Day festival is one of the most popular events on our calendar and we are excited to confirm the date of 20 April 2024. The council is always working hard to ensure it continues to grow and offer new attractions each year. With so much going on throughout the event, it’s easy to keep the whole family entertained for several hours with a variety of medieval-themed fun and games. We’re looking forward to welcoming lots of people to the town to join the celebrations again this year from 11am."
