Just like Covent Garden, Spitalfields used to be home to a thriving fruit and vegetable market. The market has gone, but the area, including the market buildings, Hawkswmoor's Christ Church, and the old houses around Brushfield Street, have all undergone a renaissance. At one time this area was the home of Huguenot silk weavers, fleeing religious intolerance in France, now it is vibrant, alive and multicultural.
Back in 1976
Spitalfields Festival was originally conceived as a classical music festival. It has gradually expanded to encompass a Winter Festival and reach out to local schools, whilst also spilling out beyond the original church venue.
This year's summer festival runs from 8 – 23 June and will cater for a wide range of tastes, from children to adults, from Early Music, the Renaissance period, Baroque, the Classical and Romantic periods and Contemporary. It will extend beyond classical music and will embrace Jazz, Popular and World Music.
It will not be restricted to music, but will also include walks, visits, talks and debates. Events will be both free and ticketed. Among the featured musicians will be the Gabrieli Consort & Players, Matthew Barley and Talvin Singh. Concerts and entertainment will take place at various times of the day including free vocal music: Lunchtime in the Market.
