Spamalot is a Tony Award winning musical adapted, or "lovingly ripped off" as they like to say, from Monty Python's 1975 film 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'. The troupe of singing and dancing knights will be continuing their search for the holy grain at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth from Tuesday 20th February till Saturday 24th of February for 7 shows.
Written by Monty Python's Eric Idle, the musical draws heavily on the original film. There are still many of the same gags like coconut clapping porters, the giant trojan rabbit and a mad killer bunny, but Spamalot is made for the stage and adds to the original to create a fully fledged musical while retaining the Monty Python humour and absurdity.
King Arthur is searching for some brave knights, unfortunately the ones he finds don't quite match with those you've heard about in the classic Arthurian tales. No one is spared as Monty Python take on the legend of King Arthur; they're self-obsessed, violent or, at best, simply dithering fools. Sent on a mission by God, King Arthur and the knights set off to try and find the Holy Grail. There's a string of questionable attempts, but meanwhile it seems everyone is more concerned about pursuing success on Broadway. Spamalot both parodies and celebrates both the Arthurian legend and the world of musical theatre in true Monty Python style.
The songs are mostly originals written by Eric Idle for the musical, but Monty Python fans will enjoy the addition of 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life', which was originally from Monty Python's Life of Brian.
