As the slogan for the town says, it really is "The town, the shore and so much more." Normally these slogans massively over-hype the place in question, but in the case of Southend it doesn't.

There are so many things to do in this fairly small seaside town that you will be pushed to see and do it all.

Starting off the huge variety of events is the Kingswear Castle afternoon cruise, which leaves from the pier. This hour and a half estuary cruise takes place on a 1924 steamboat called the "Kingswear Castle", and there is the chance to grab a snack and a drink in the decks below. This experience will cost £15 for adults and £10 for children so its a perfect activity for a family. The boat will leave on Thursday 9th August at 2pm.

If music is more your thing then a trip to the Southend Pier Festival is a must. It brings together musicians from all over the UK and has something for absolutely everyone with the genres of music ranging from Blues to Garage and back to Indie! The cost of entry onto the pier varies depending on how you want to travel, but a simple walking ticket costs £2 for adults and £1 for children. The different costs can be found Feb 2012 here. The event takes place over two days and they are Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of August, from 12pm to 6pm.

This one is really for the kids. The Teddy Bear's Picnic that takes place at Southchurch Hall Museum will provide your children with four hours of entertainment. There will be stories, hunts, arts and crafts and lots of prizes, and all you've got to remember is to bring a picnic with you if you want one. The Teddy Bear's Picnic will take place on the 15th of August from 10am-3pm.

This is just a taster of some of the up and coming events that are taking place in Southend. There are many other events and activities that may grab your attention, and they can be found here. You've got to remember that Southend is also a brilliant place to go for a day at the seaside, so if you want the more traditional day out, Southend is still the place to go. But lets be honest, whilst you are there why wouldn't you want to go to one of the many events?
