Birmingham-based choreographer and dancer Sonia Sabri brings her latest work Roshni to the city in May with a performance at Birmingham Hippodrome. Combining classical Kathak and contemporary dance with live music, Roshni is inspired by the stories and experiences of everyday people.
Featuring improvisational playing of the santoor, tabla, viola and kaval, Roshni brings together storytelling, audience interaction, beatboxing and spoken word to illustrate the highs and lows of life today. The work also features an upbeat interactive segment with the audience, offering an introduction to those who have never experienced Kathak, as well as connoisseurs.
A multi award-winning artist, Sonia is a leading Kathak dancer, who creates work that spans from the classical roots of Kathak to explorations of contemporary approaches and often blends Western and Eastern traditions. Her recent large scale works include The Opening Ceremony for Birmingham’s Commonwealth Games 2022, where she was an associate choreographer.
Music for Roshni is arranged by Sarvar Sabri, an internationally-renowned tabla musician who comes from a long line of Indian musicians and is the husband of Sonia Sabri.
Sonia Sabri Company is a Birmingham Hippodrome Associate and the performance on 16 May will be followed by a post-show discussion with Sonia and Sarvar. For more information and tickets see
